10.22.20 // I can see you

I can see you getting older.
.
You move a bit slower, you cuddle a bit harder, and the white under your chin is a bit more pronounced.
.
I can feel you getting older.
.
It makes my heart heavy.
.
We've been together since you were 7 weeks old and you've been by my side for almost all of it. The few moments you weren't, was my mistake, and as soon as you were licking my face I knew I had messed up.
.
We have a secret language we share, nicknames that make no sense, and rituals that seem insanely odd to others.
.
But we make sense to each other.
.
You are mine
.
But, I am also yours.
.
Scout, I know one day you'll drift away from me. Even writing and acknowledging that fact makes the tears well in my eyes, my throat close in fear, and my mind race with sadness.
.
You're my golden girl and each day is a little brighter because of you.
.
Here's to many more years.
.
.
.
And while I wrote this sitting on the ground, Scout came over a licked away my tears. She really is a part of me, one of the best parts.
