4.4.22 // Performative Vulnerability

I recently saw an outdoor influencer with a large following mention how they were trying to balance showing up authentically without slipping into "performative vulnerability".
.
It was the first time I had heard someone connect "performative" to vulnerability and for some reason, it made me really sad.
.
Dr. Brene Brown's definition of vulnerability hits home with me, "vulnerability is uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure. But vulnerability is not weakness; it's our most accurate measure of courage. When the barrier is our belief about vulnerability, the question becomes: 'Are we willing to show up and be seen when we can't control the outcome?' When the barrier to vulnerability is about safety, the question becomes: 'Are we willing to create courageous spaces so we can be fully seen?”
.
So, what is performative vulnerability? Performative vulnerability is the act of oversharing for the purpose of seeking validation from others.
.
The line of sharing really comes down to intention- why do you share or don't share certain things.
.
And this is something only YOU can know. But where is the line between sharing yourself for the reason of untaming your being (G.Doyle) and for the reason of gaining external validation?
.
Only you can decide what your intentions are in sharing... But, even if you're putting yourself out there with validation as your main goal, there is still so much to learn and you can serve as such an incredible example for others to be courageously vulnerable.
.
Vulnerability is not an easy task. It does not come naturally to many who have repressed themselves for years. So, I can't help but wonder if the performative vulnerability has the potential to manifest into a more natural vulnerability that doesn't come with the desire for approval?
.
Let's (lovingly) discuss?
